1941 Grade 2 Home Guard Dated Helmet
This Home Guard helmet is complete with liner and chinstrap and dated 1941 with the maker initials M.S. The liner has started to crack and the top of the helmet has been dented, possibly during the war. The inside of the shell has been named in ink, but is unreadable. This helmet came from a house clearance in Kent a few years back.
This is a grade 2 Steel Helmet made from mild steel plate. Following the evacuation from Dunkirk and serious bombing raids on production plants, the government had problems supplying helmets to the armed forces and the civil defence. So it was decided to issue sub-standard helmets to the civil defence and the Home Guard.
From Sept 1940 until July 1941, grade 2 mild steel helmets as denoted by three drill holes in the side were issued to the Home Guard. These were painted in the standard khaki colour as opposed to the standard grey for grade 2 helmets.
